Since the early days of their collaboration, Elmgreen & Dragset have reconfigured conventional exhibition spaces, transforming them into uncanny settings within a gallery context. Populated with their sculptural works, these environments invite exploration and allow visitors to complete the narrative fragments offered within. By juxtaposing exhibition spaces with incongruous settings or situations, the duo encourages visitors to investigate the social, cultural and political structures embedded within everyday settings. Spaces is unique in its scope in that it focuses on the holistic spacial alterations that Elmgreen & Dragset create, rather than the installations and public art that have been previously studied. Texts and a chronology of past spatial alterations provide academic context and an insightful overview of this important aspect of the artists’ oeuvre.
